Engine will not rev past 5000rpm

  1. Help!
The bike will start and idle ok. But it will not pull RPM. Around 5K it feels like the engine hit a rev limiter, if I drop the rpm it feels ok again.
Is this some kind of limp mode in the ECU?

I checked the fuel pressure and filter and they are OK.
    Any ideas where to start?

  2. Fuel filter would have been my first guess, Brett. Kinked fuel line? Plunger in one of the quick disconnects got some trash in it?

Have you checked the fuel vent line to make sure it's not clogged? I'm not sure how much effect it has on fuel injected bikes, but it can really foul up bikes with carbs. I'll be the first to admit I'm no wizard with these fancy, new electronic bikes. 8)

At 5k, does it drop one cylinder or both? One might make me think bad coil or trigger. I've had some older Ducatis do this in the past.

Anybody else have any ideas for Brett?

BTW, Brett, what unit do you ride and where do you live? Just curious.

  4. Thanks for the ideas. I am working on it today and will let you know what I find.

Bike is #1442 and I am in Minnesota, just north of Minneapolis.

0771: Throttle position sensor sounds like a very good idea.

    Keep the ideas coming!
    Cheers,
    Brett

  5. Thanks for the help.
    Throttle position sensor is OK.
    Fuel pump is not...

After working on the bike this issue got much worse. It would not start at all.
When the ignition is on the fuel pump would not prime.

Looks like the issues with not pulling RPM was the fuel pump on the way out.
    Thanks for the help.

  6. Perhaps call Chris at CaliforniaCycle ... their fuel pump is exact fit & much lower than dealer price.

  7. California Cycleworks' site is linked on the front page of the forum, or you can go there by simply navigating to http://www.ca-cycleworks.com.

Chris is "good people", and as 0771 said, many of his parts are lower cost alternatives to factory items, and are of equal or better quality. I recommend him without hesitation (and without compensation....just in case you're wondering). While you're there, check out Chris' five gallon plus fuel tanks for MHe!

  8. More help is needed.
I have replaced the fuel pump, filter and relays, ignition coils and did an ECU swap with another bike and no luck. Throttle position sensor is ok. Voltage regulator is ok.

The bike initially starts ok but as it runs over a period of about 5 min it gets worse until finally if you give it any throttle it will stall. If I let the bike sit for 30 sec it will start fine and the process repeates. It will run ok initially and degrade until it stalls.

    Any thoughts?!?!?

  9. I'm not home right now to look, but I know there's a mechanical diaphram fuel pressure regulator device (mounted near crancase breather?)...if bike sits too long that device may get varnish/gummed inside, and can cause your described symptom, etc.

  10. 0771,
Thanks for the tip. I replaced the regulator with a nice adjustable one with a gage. Bike runs great!

  11. Good work !

Please share about your specific upgrade hardware.

Perhaps include any pressure data and your setting.

Have you checked to see whether if in the past when timing belts were replaced, the belt wheels were positioned exact to specs? This will affect performance if a wheel is off by just one tooth, and if both cylinders are affected...well, just my two cents..BristolGeorge
